How the times have changed

The clip is saying just because something looks normal does not mean that it is. The video says that homosexuality is a sickness almost like a disease. The way we used to feel about homosexuals is the way we feel about murderers, rapists, and pedophiles. Parents teach their kids in life to be careful about these kinds of people. Out of the things in life to fear homosexuality should not be one of them. America was built on a principle of freedom, equality, and tolerance of differences. Yet we don't always follow these principles. The policies we have with other countries reflect the same intolerance as shown in the Old Homosexual warning video. With what happened on 9/11 we now look at every Arab or foreigner that looks like them as a terrorist. I think that after a attack on us we start to look at people more closely not for who they are but what they look like. We now fear Arabs and people that look like them everywhere we go. We might take an extra look at them as we or they walk by. Where as before we could not have cared. In the Levi video they show that it is okay to be homosexual. They have guy who is pulling us his pants and as he does a guy in a phone booth pops up. It's like the extreme opposite from the first video because the first one is saying be aware of the homosexual and the Levi one is a commercial showing accepting homosexuality. It goes to show you how times have changed. It's not like everyone is accepting of everyone else because people still judge other people but more people are coming out than used to. You have celebrities saying that they are gay on magazine covers which we never used to see before. We still express a fear of the unknown because we don't give the time or day to anyone that is different from us. This fear is caused by the past because of what has happened and what may happen in the future.

Internet

Is there anything you can't find on the internet? I think the internet is one of the greatest inventions ever. Internet has changed entertainment for me because I no longer have to sit around waiting for a show to start on television. I can watch it online whenever I want. The thing that surprises me the most is the fact that some stations don't put their shows online. There are a couple advantages of putting shows online. For one, they can attract more viewers because if the show is available online, people who miss the show on television can still watch it. Second, they can get money from advertisers because they add commercials during their shows online. Also, it helps if someone missed an episode because then they can just watch it online. Otherwise, if someone misses enough episodes they might stop watching it all together and thus viewers will be lost. Being in college, I especially watch more shows online because I have less time to watch shows when they are on. I use Youtube regularly because there are so many funny videos on there. Whatever you're in the mood for you can find on Youtube. A sitcom is normally a half hour long and is defined as a comedy. The main goal of a sitcom is to entertain you for that half hour and if it can't it normally gets canceled. Television shows are different now because there are a lot less comedies. If you look at the top 20 shows, there is only one comedy, and that is the show "Two and A Half Men". Right now we are in a phase of reality television. The two biggest ones right now are "American Idol" and "Dancing with the Stars", but there are so many more. Television studios like reality shows because they are cheap to make and get massive ratings. Television shows are more serialized nowadays because you have to watch them weekly and are an hour long. I don't think the internet has effected sitcoms for me. Sitcoms are on during the day and often lead up to prime time. During prime time, I want to watch a serialized show like "Prison Break" or "24". People's interest are always changing so eventually you might see sitcoms being as popular as they once were.

Dove video

In the Dove video they start out with a woman that is far from perfect but after they have a photoshop-esque session she looks more like society‘s perception of perfect. By lengthening her neck, enlarging her lips and eyes, lowering her brow, and curing imperfections in her complexion, the photo shop artist is able to make her appear to be what society considers the ideal image of a woman. These changes, along with the centering of her face, make her more attractive and appealing.
Of course I feel pressure in terms of my physical appearance but then again who doesn’t. One of the pressures I feel is that I am not big enough. There are so many people that are stronger or quicker then me. The main pressure I feel is from myself. I am very critical of myself because I judge my appearance against the standards set by society and the media.
Society tells us how to behave and what to say. If you try to go against it you can see some people turn their back on you. Media especially influences many people. Whenever you watch something in some form it is the media telling us how we should look or act. Most people look at actors and actresses and wonder why they can’t look like that and it makes them feel ugly or as if they don‘t belong. Peers are also affected by society and the media. They can be judgmental of the way you look and act as well. Not fitting into society’s ideal image can and does make many people feel like outcasts, but are we really outcasts when society’s ideal image is computer generated?
